Ham Brained Ideas

2007-07-03

Ever wonder what song was  Billboard's number one song on the day you were born? Me neither. But just in case you do want to find out, simply click on this link, select your month and day and you will see a list of all the songs for all years.

http://www.joshhosler.biz/NumberOneInHistory/SelectMonth.htm

Mine so happens to be So Much In Love, by the Tymes.

Now if you click on that link, it will atttempt to open and download using ITUNES or send you to Amazon to purchase the cd.

Which is kind of a pain in the ass. Why must everything be a cross promotional issue and try to force us to spend our money? I know its only 99 cents, if I really wanted the song-which I don't, or I'd already own it. But why does every little piece of minutiea information have to draw a profit somewhere?

I read with interest tonight a story about the richest man you've never heard of. They call him "The Man Who Owns The Internet" and in a shocking side story, it wasn't Al Gore. Newp, its Kevin Ham. What's his claim to internet fame? He profits off of typos. He purchases domain names that would be common URL to type without a search engine, and he buys up domain names that end in cm, a common typo for some people. However he's really pissing off other dotcommers, because any international domain names use the two letter extension, such as UK for United Kingdom. At first thought I sensed where this could be an issue, but Mr. Ham uses wildcards to redirect traffic and actually struck a deal with the Prime Minister of Cameroon that funnels money back to his country. He's now after Colombia (.co), Oman (.om), Niger (.ne), and Ethiopia (.et) . Well haha to you Mr. Ham my most frequent typo is .vom so have fun with that as well. But this is the simplistic genius behind his cyber billions.

Say you wanted some kind of paper. Instead of googling or yahooing it, you type directly into the search bar paper.com but instead type paper.cm

He redirects the traffic to his own site Agoga.com which in this instance is a nicely categorized page about paper products, but its all pay per click advertising and my guess since I don't want to give this guy a nickel, some lovely spyware as well.

But I decided to dig a little deeper as the article also stated he likes to buy domains near to ones that are copyrited. It doesn't count as cybersquatting as he isn't stepping on the toes of the legal owners trademark. Here's a list of what he does own, just to give you a glimmer of how he's cashing in. BTW I'm not including the links, as that would defeat the point of this blog.

I long for the not so long ago days when there was absolutely no advertising on the internet. The uber geeks sneered at the concept in its DOS format, before the GUI interface. Simpler times indeed, when we didn't rely on our computer for entertainment and we were excited when clock radio's came out to gently wake us up to music every day. (fade to music)

As we stroll along together
Holding hands, walking all alone
So in love are we two
That we don't know what to do
So in love (doo, so in love)
In a world of our own (doo, so in love)

As we stroll by the sea together
Under stars twinkling high above
So in love are we two
No one else but me and you
So in love (doo, so in love)
So much in love (doo, so in love)
So in love (doo, so in love)
So much in love (doo, so in love)

We stroll along together
I tell you I need you oh so much
I love, love you my darling
Can you tell it in my touch?

When we walk down the aisle together
We will vow to be together till we die
So much love have we two
Just can't wait to say "I do"
So in love (doo, so in love)
Are you and I (doo, you and I)
So in love (doo, so in love)
Are you and I (doo, you and I)
So in love (doo, so in love)

Are you and I (doo, you and I)
